Using Props as Assets: Skillful Support

In this three-session module, Vanessa will explore the thoughtful, intentional, and creative use of props in the yoga classroom. Participants will learn how props can create greater accessibility, stability, awareness, and ease, while also considering when they may become distracting, unnecessary, or get in the way of a student’s experience.

Through practical instruction and hands-on exploration, teachers will develop a deeper understanding of how to introduce props with clarity and purpose. The module will examine how props can help teachers respond to the unique needs of each student without creating dependency or suggesting limitation. Participants will also learn how to offer props in ways that encourage curiosity, choice, and greater connection to the body.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

SESSION ONE: Using Straps and Blocks
Explore the versatility of straps and blocks and learn how they can support alignment, stability, mobility, and greater awareness in a variety of postures.

SESSION TWO: Using Blankets, Bolsters, and Sandbags
Discover how these props can provide grounding, comfort, support, and ease. This session will explore their use in active postures, restorative practices, and moments of deeper rest and release.

SESSION THREE: Tying It All Together
Bring the principles and practices from the first two sessions together. Participants will explore how to select and combine props intentionally, adapt their use for different bodies and needs, and integrate them seamlessly into a well-rounded yoga class.

At the Soul Institute, we view props as assets, never crutches. They are valuable tools that can expand possibilities, support exploration, deepen understanding, and empower students to connect more fully with their own bodies and practice. When used skillfully, props do not take away from the practice. Instead they help make the practice more personal, responsive, and accessible to every student.
