What if learning anatomy felt less like memorizing muscles and bones and more like solving a puzzle?
Join AJ Short, Soul Yoga teacher and strength and conditioning coach, for Anatomy Detectives: Inside the Pose, an interactive continuing education module designed to help yoga teachers understand what is actually happening inside the body during asana and how to use that knowledge when teaching real people.
Instead of studying anatomy in isolation, we’ll start with something yoga teachers already know: the poses.
Together, we’ll take familiar yoga postures apart and investigate them from the inside out. What joints are moving? What muscles are working? Where do we need mobility, and where do we need stability? What might limit a student’s movement? Why can the same pose look completely different from one body to another?
After learning foundational anatomical terms and concepts, participants will become Anatomy Detectives, working in small groups to investigate a pose. You’ll explore the anatomy behind the shape, observe how it changes in different bodies, and consider how props, variations, and teaching choices can change the experience.
Then we'll bring our findings back to the group.
We'll workshop the poses together asking questions, experimenting in our own bodies, exploring variations, and challenging some of our assumptions about what a yoga pose is “supposed” to look like.
This isn't about memorizing anatomy.
It's about learning to see bodies differently.
Teachers will leave with a better understanding of how anatomy informs movement, how individual variation affects asana, and how to make more thoughtful choices when cueing, adapting, and teaching the different bodies in front of them.
Come ready to move, investigate, ask questions, and play. There won't always be one right answer and that's the point.
